Meet Our Partners: Irish Community Care (ICC)

Each month, we will be bringing you a new partner profile, giving you the opportunity meet our team and find out about their involvement in Directions. Say a big hello to Irish Community Care!

Can you tell us about Irish Community Care?

Irish Community Care (ICC) exists to ensure that the vibrant Irish communities in the North West are well informed, empowered, we do this by identifying and responding to the health and wellbeing, social care and cultural needs of Irish, Irish Traveller/Gypsy Traveller communities, including people of Irish descent, and anyone connected though Irish-ness (our communities). We offer culturally sensitive information, advice, advocacy and support services, through asset-based community development, with our communities at the centre.

Why did you become involved in Directions?

Mikey Dunne, Education, Training & Link Worker: ‘I have experience of working with young adults who have had difficulty in the education system and know how that can limit a person’s chances of finding the right course or job later in life. There are lots of great training opportunities out there and I really enjoy helping people find the one that is right for them. It is great to see people’s confidence developing and barriers being overcome.’

Maura Kennedy, Basic Skills Tutor: ‘I had worked in adult education and the arts before I took a break to look after my children. When I was thinking about coming back to work, I volunteered with Crisis Skylight Merseyside on their ESOL classes, where I was introduced to the adult phonics programme, ‘Yes We Can Read’, and volunteered with ICC on our prison outreach programme. I know from personal experience how important it is to feel confident about your literacy in order to get support and opportunities. When the opportunity arose to work on the Directions programme with people who wanted support with literacy, I jumped at the chance. It is the most enjoyable and rewarding work I have ever done.’

Tell us about the activities you’ll be running with Directions?

We are currently offering 1 to 1 support with literacy and access to education, training and employment. This has been mainly online because of the pandemic but we are getting back to seeing people face to face now and really making progress with getting people where they want to be.

Do you have any events coming up?

We are looking forward to getting our group work going once restrictions are lifted and will be offering Driver Theory Test practice and CV/interview preparation once it is safe to do so.
